Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation: [se'lena kinta'nija 'peres] (April 16, 1971 until March 31, 1995) also known as Selena, was an American Tejano singer. She was dubbed the "Queen of Tejano music", her contributions to music and fashion have made her one of the most well-known Mexican-American entertainers in the latter half of the 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her at third in the year 2020, in their "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", which was basing it on Latin music as well as Latin albums. Her clothing choices earned her the title "Tejano Madonna". She is also among the most influential Latin performers of all time and is believed to have helped propel the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest child of the Quintanilla family, she debuted on the music scene as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos, that also included her older siblings A.B. Quintanilla Quintanilla. The singer was frequently criticized in the 1980s , and was denied bookings at Texas venues for her performance of Tejano music, a male-dominated genre. After being awarded the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she gained the attention of her peers. The singer signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and made her debut album with her own name the following year. In the meantime, her brother became her principal music producer and songwriter.Selena released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) that peaked at top of the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight months in a row. It was hailed by music critics as being the "breakthrough" album of her musical career. "Como la Flor", one of its singles, became her most adored track. Live! Live! In 1994 she released Amor Prohibido, which became one of the most popular Latin albums sold in the United States. It was critically acclaimed as being responsible for Tejano music's first marketable era as it became one of the most well-known Latin music subgenres of the time.
